My First Income Report – July 2013

Inspired by Pat Flynn I’m going to share my income from my online business with you. So this is the first post in this monthly series.

I’m doing this not because I’m incredibly successful in my first months, but I want to prove that it is possible for everyone to make money online!

Ok, the income I’m sharing with you in this post was earned in July 2013, though I started taking action in April 2013.

I want to get rid of this myth that you can get rich over night. Surely, there are very few people who have that breakthrough, but that’s not the standard case!

Normally it takes months and maybe even years of hard and consistent work, before the money slowly starts coming in.

How I Started

My story is no exception. The first thing I did was to read Pat Flynns book Let Go, where he shares his journey from being laid off to becoming a successful entrepreneur.

In this book he recommends the Internet Business Mastery Academy, which I joined immediately. Since the academy is full of useful step-by-step guides on how to start a successful internet business and their community is blasting, I became a lifetime member after just two months. This membership takes a huge part in my success, that’s for sure.

On March 28th I published my first post on this blog and on April 19th I’ve cluelessly created my first pillar content about internet business ideas. I just wanted to share different ways to make money online, but that post started to rank in Google and so far it has more than 23,000 views.

I decided that challenging myself would be the best way to learn quickly, so in May I challenged myself to write my very first eBook within one month. What came out was The Entrepreneurial Lifestyle, a book telling my story and including interviews with great entrepreneurs like Jeremy Frandsen, Neil Patel, Spencer Haws and more.

You can get it for free if you sign up to my newsletter! Or you can support me and buy it for the small amount of $2,79. You see that this book isn’t meant to make a lot of money, but to inspire people and motivate them to overcome fears and doubts and just take action.

My actions in summary:

Making Money

Ok, let’s be honest. I didn’t start my blog just for fun, I need to make a living online and this blog will definitely have to support me with income.

That’s why I introduced Google Adsense. Since I get a lot of traffic from organic searches, people tend to be less connected with me.

Usually they read my article, maybe a second one and then they leave my site. Not a good foundation to make money with affiliate sales or promoting my own products.

But Google Adsense IS a good way to make money, even when your bounce rate is high. That doesn’t mean I’m ripping people off, instead I’m doing them a favor. When they want to leave my site, they’ll do it anyway. With the ads I’m offering them alternatives that might interest them (who clicks on ads that aren’t interesting for you?).

So they can open a site that is relevant for them and I’m making a small amount of money. I agree that affiliate sales and selling my own products is far more profitable, though it’s very hard for me.

With Google Adsense I was able to make at least some money, whereas I had zero (!) affiliate sales within the first months.

My Income

Let’s get into it!

I’ll keep this in the style from Pat Flynn, because I think it’s great how clearly he get’s into the details.

MyGreatOnlineBusiness.com
Google Adsense: $159,75
Affiliate Sales: $0
Total: $159,75

eBook – The Entrepreneurial Lifestyle
Total: $0

jkoch.me
Affiliate Sales: $0
Total: $0

TOTAL: $159,75

Conclusion

As I said I’m having a hard time with affiliate sales, though I’m confident that it starts getting better over time. It’s just a process I’m new to and I’m still learning. I’m sure that my recommendations are useful for my audience. I don’t want to sell stuff to people, I want them to see the value in my recommendations without being pitched. So having zero sales is nothing to feel bad about, I’m sure it grows over time.

I didn’t do any promotions for my eBook yet, I just use it as incentive for my opt-in list and link to it from my menu. I’ve given it away for free in the first two months and the feedback I’m getting is awesome. That’s why I’ll do some more promotions from now on and maybe we’ll see some sales in the next month.

Adsense will be a part of my income strategy. Since I just introduced it in July I was testing all the time. I also had a few days where my site was down, so that revenue will definitely increase for August 2013.

After all I’m happy with the July, because it was the first month I EVER made money online. I didn’t expect that I’d make $4.000 within my first month, simply because it’s not achievable for most people.

The goal is to make $1,000 monthly, so that I can quit my job and focus on internet business fulltime. I think I’m on a pretty good way to reach this goal within a few months.

Let me know what you think, how has your first month been? Obviously there’s a lot to be improved in my strategy, so please bare with me – I’m getting better every single day!

All the best,

Jan

  1. Hi Jan,

This is really awesome Jan! I love that you show us what’s working and what’s not in your business. I know that you will take all this to the next level very soon. You are an action taker, just like me, that’s why we are going to achieve big things in business and life!

I can’t wait to collaborate some more and see your different projects take off. Keep working hard and don’t forget to enjoy the journey 🙂

    All the best,
    Navid

    1. Thanks for your encouraging words Navid 🙂

It feels great to take action and seeing the first results, even though it’s just little money right now.
For me, it’s not only about the money but also about doing things I love.
Just like we met, I really enjoy working with like-minded entrepreneurs and going some part of the journey together.

I’m confident that I’ll reach my goals, and as soon as I stop expecting to get rich over night, it’s even more enjoyable 😉

  2. Hey Jan, to be honest you have done so much in so little time that I don’t know how you haven’t earn a lot more money but let me tell you one thing, I know many other bloggers and online entrepreneurs who never even reached $100 USD on Adsense with blogs that were two years old.

I’m not exactly 100% sure (I keep forgetting) but I believe the first money I ever made online was after three months and it was from a PTC site (I don’t even recommend you go and waste your time there btw) but it felt GREAT.

And shortly after that, I made about $50 from my first affiliate commission and that felt even better of course so it does scale up with time and just like you said, you don’t have to be running a pitch festival all over the place for others to take actions on your recommendations.

Even the big bloggers have problems with their email series, blog series, 30 day challenges and all of that is because people have wised up, the only difference is that an important blogger won’t tell you this.

You are already on great training programs and have done a lot more than all I did in two years online, actually I haven’t even done any interviews (or probably a few but that’s it) and you have done so much in so little, you are already an inspiration.

Kudos on the money from Adsense and knowing that all of this takes hard work to work properly, once you get that little snow ball going, it just becomes massive man.

All the best and keep up with the awesome work Jan!

    Sergio

    1. Hi Sergio,
it’s comments like yours that ensure me to be on the right track – even though I made only little money so far.
That I didn’t make more money from Adsense was due to a three week testing phase of earning literally $1 per day maximum until I found the best combination of ads.

To be honest, I think that not having any affiliate sales is closely related to my high bounce rate. That’s the drawback from relying on SEO traffic. The people visiting my site usually don’t know me and thus don’t trust me when I recommend affiliate products. That’s why I decided to shift my focus to Adsense and I’m sure that this blog will soon make up to $500 per month.

Though of course I’m still using affiliate products, somehow I’ll figure it out 😉

I’m really honoured that you call me an inspiration! You have so much more experience than me and created an awesome brand around yourself.

Let’s inspire each other and motivate ourselves to reach our goals 😉

      Best!

  3. I love reading about other people’s journeys. I want to say congrats, you have now made more money online than 99.99% of people out there 🙂 It only gets better from here.

    1. Thanks for stopping by Carlie 🙂
I hope to motivate people with this income statement. Not everyone starts with $1.000 per day and it’s totally ok to start small – that’s how the majority of us is starting!

      Best regards

  4. Good job with the earnings so far! I’ve been going at my website for about a month now so I’m not earning anything, but like you I’m not expect a single cent until later. I’ve also been kicked out of Google Adsense about 2 years ago so that’s not an option for me, haha!

Question though: you said you’re trying to achieve $1000 a month and then you’ll quit your job. I think $1000 a month is pretty thin money to live on o_O. How are you going to do it?

    1. Hi Jay,
      thanks for sharing your story!
I’m sorry to hear that you got kicked out of Google Adsense, but fortunately there are lots of alternatives. Take a look at this site, they showcase and review some other ad networks.

To answer your question, I can live on $1.000 per month because I’m living with my parents right now and the only fixed costs I have are my car and my mobile phone 😉
That’s why I’m able to quit my job at $1.000.

I’m sure that you’ll make money on your site, when you take action consistently. It will be tough some times, but it’s definitely possible!

      All the best!

  5. Hi Jan,

Awesome that you publish your earnings á la Pat Flynn style. I think this whole industry needs more transparency and you contribute to that! I’m excited to follow your growth!

    Thanks
    Victor Björklund

    1. Hi Victor,

      thanks for stopping by!
I agree that we need more transparency, at least in HOW we make our money. Lots of people claim to make their money on the way they teach in their training programs, but in fact it’s their training programs that make the most money.

Especially in Germany there is a bad image connected to internet business, maybe because most Germans are naturally feared of everything new, lol.

I hope to inspire others with my work, so that people understand that they don’t need a job to have a good life.
In fact, I enjoy my life a lot more right now, even though I have less money then ever before.

      All the best,
      Jan

  6. Great job on earning some money online…I love reading people’s journey to a full-time income online. I am also journaling my progress.

At least you have an ebook written. I am still working on my first product.

I think that it is amazing that you have earned $159.75 just from Adsense. (did you earn it all just from this site, or do you have another site online?)

Your Adsense income is making me re-think about not putting it on my site. What you say about people coming to you from the search engines and then quickly leaving makes sense.

I have no doubt that you will be up to your $1,000.00 per month in no time at all. I will be back to watch your journey.

    1. Hi Susan,
thanks for stopping by and leaving this encouraging comment!
Yeah, I wrote an eBook and even though it doesn’t sell, it helped me a lot to get clear of my thoughts and plan my future! And it was a lot of fun as well 🙂

I earned the $159,75 from Adsense with this blog only. And I already outperformed that amount for this month, so it’s quite a steady income from this site (actually it’s this post that earns by FAR the most money).

Right now I’m finishing off 4 new niche sites that will be monetized with Google Adsense in the first step. You can read more about those sites here. My first niche site (shinsupport.com) won’t make any money ever. I wanted to use that keyword to show the differences between broad keyword research and exact match research, but due to the Google Keyword Planner Update, the broad search is no longer available.

But I’m pretty confident that this blog together with my 4 new niche sites can earn $1,000 per month when the niche sites start to rank. The keywords of those sites have monthly search volumes between 20k and 60k and at least 1€ CPC. Can’t wait to see them going up in Google 😉

I’d love if you keep me posted on your decision with introducing Google Adsense to your blog!

      All the best,
      Jan

  7. Jan,

First, you have balls. It takes a bunch to step out there and be transparent about your dealings online. It’s something most will never do.

I also love your hustle which is evident by all you’ve done so far. The first money I made online back in ’09 was from AdSense too, so I can definitely relate to where you are. It was a lot of trial and error to even get to that point, and while I know you have your fair share of obstacles, I’m confident that’ll you’ll be ok in the long run because you’ve got hustle.

With time comes experience. You’ll also want to learn from as many people doing what you want to do as possible. Mentor help a bunch, so find some.

I wish you the best in your endeavors!

    Peace,
    Dewane

P.S. Shoot me an email if you ever have questions about this online stuff 🙂

    1. Thanks Dewane,
I really appreciate your kind and encouraging words!

It truly is a hustle, but I believe that only constant hustle lets entrepreneurs and their businesses grow.
You are so right that it’s a lot of trial and error but fortunately there are some tools for automating those processes.

I’m wondering how you started with Adsense. Did you use it on a blog or on niche sites? And how about today, does Adsense still play a reasonable role for you?

Thanks for your comment, I included in my calendar for tomorrow to check out your blog! Just had a quick look and it looks really interesting!

      All the best,
      Jan

Jan how many unique visitors do you get to make over $100/mo with AdSense? 🙂

      Oktober 25, 2013

      Hey Ben,
in July 2013 I had 8,377 unique visitors and 12,183 pageviews.

But since the beginning of October I can see a big drop in traffic. Right now I’m at 5,664 unique visitors but already at 10,653 pageviews. So the pageviews stayed quite constant which means that I could increase the engagement of my audience with my site.

I’ll share the latest statistics in my next income report, so stay tuned 🙂

      Best,
      Jan
